The Wrong Way To Pray

To Be Seen Of Men

Matthew 6:5 (KJV) And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew 6:6 (KJV) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Vain Repetitions

Matthew 6:7 (KJV) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Matthew 6:8 (KJV) Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Hindrances To Prayer

Unconfessed Sin

Psalms 66:18 (KJV) If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

Despising Godís Word

Proverbs 28:9 (KJV) He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

Your Iniquities Have Separated You

Isaiah 59:1 (KJV) Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

Isaiah 59:2 (KJV) But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Hardness Of Heart

Mark 11:25 (KJV) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

Mark 11:26 (KJV) But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Self Righteousness

Luke 18:10 (KJV) Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

Luke 18:11 (KJV) The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Luke 18:12 (KJV) I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Luke 18:13 (KJV) And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Luke 18:14 (KJV) I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Sin

John 9:31 (KJV) Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

Selfish Motives

James 4:2 (KJV) Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

James 4:3 (KJV) Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Not Honoring Your Wife

1 Peter 3:7 (KJV) Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Prayerís That God Didnít Hear

Because Of Sin In The Persons LIfe

Esau

Sells His Birthright

Genesis 25:29 (KJV) And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

Genesis 25:30 (KJV) And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

Genesis 25:31 (KJV) And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

Genesis 25:32 (KJV) And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

Genesis 25:33 (KJV) And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

Genesis 25:34 (KJV) Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Esauís Blessing (Curse?)

Genesis 27:30 (KJV) And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

Genesis 27:31 (KJV) And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.

Genesis 27:32 (KJV) And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

Genesis 27:33 (KJV) And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.

Genesis 27:34 (KJV) And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

Genesis 27:35 (KJV) And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.

Genesis 27:36 (KJV) And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?

Genesis 27:37 (KJV) And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?

Genesis 27:38 (KJV) And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

Genesis 27:39 (KJV) And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

Genesis 27:40 (KJV) And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

Sought With Tears

Hebrews 12:14 (KJV) Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Hebrews 12:15 (KJV) Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Hebrews 12:16 (KJV) Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

Hebrews 12:17 (KJV) For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Moses

The Crime

Numbers 20:7 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Numbers 20:8 (KJV) Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and SPEAK ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

Numbers 20:9 (KJV) And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

Numbers 20:10 (KJV) And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

Numbers 20:11 (KJV) And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod HE SMOTE THE ROCK TWICE: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

Numbers 20:12 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

The Punishment Not Removed

Deuteronomy 3:21 (KJV) And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

Deuteronomy 3:22 (KJV) Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.

Deuteronomy 3:23 (KJV) And I besought the LORD at that time, saying,

Deuteronomy 3:24 (KJV) O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

Deuteronomy 3:25 (KJV) I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

Deuteronomy 3:26 (KJV) But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

Deuteronomy 3:27 (KJV) Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

Deuteronomy 3:28 (KJV) But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

Deuteronomy 3:29 (KJV) So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.

The Children Of Israel

When They Tried To Enter The Promised Land On Their Own

Deuteronomy 1:41 (KJV) Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

Deuteronomy 1:42 (KJV) And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

Deuteronomy 1:43 (KJV) So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

Deuteronomy 1:44 (KJV) And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

Deuteronomy 1:45 (KJV) And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

Deuteronomy 1:46 (KJV) So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

Saulís Meeting With A Witch

The Lord Answered Him Not

1 Samuel 28:7 (KJV) Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

Become Godís Enemy

1 Samuel 28:15 (KJV) And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

1 Samuel 28:16 (KJV) Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

1 Samuel 28:17 (KJV) And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:

1 Samuel 28:18 (KJV) Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

1 Samuel 28:19 (KJV) Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

Isaiah 1:12 (KJV) When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

Jeremiah 7:15 (KJV) And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

Ezekiel 20:32 (KJV) And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.

Because It Wouldnít Fulfill Godís Plan

Paul

2 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV) And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

2 Corinthians 12:8 (KJV) For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV) And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

If We Confess Our Sin

1 John 1:8 (KJV) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Praying

1† Who To Pray To

Prayer is to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit.

We Are The Sonís Of God

As Many As Received Him

John 1:12 (KJV) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 1:13 (KJV) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

That We Should Be Called The Sons Of God

1 John 3:1 (KJV) Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

Because Ye Are Sons

Galatians 4:4 (KJV) But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

Galatians 4:5 (KJV) To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Galatians 4:6 (KJV) And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Galatians 4:7 (KJV) Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Because We Are SONS We Are To Pray To OUR Heavenly FATHER

Our Father

Matthew 6:9 (KJV) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Your Heavenly Father

Luke 11:11 (KJV) If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

Luke 11:12 (KJV) Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

Luke 11:13 (KJV) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

We Cry Abba, Father

Romans 8:12 (KJV) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

Romans 8:13 (KJV) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Romans 8:14 (KJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 (KJV) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:16 (KJV) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Ask The Father

John 16:23 (KJV) And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

We Are To Pray In Jesus Name

Ask In My (Jesus) Name

John 14:9 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

John 14:10 (KJV) Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

John 14:11 (KJV) Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

John 14:12 (KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

John 14:13 (KJV) And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 14:14 (KJV) If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Pray To The Father In The Name Of The Son

John 15:16 (KJV) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

This means we ask on the basis of the merits of Jesus Christ, drawing on His account.

In The POWER OF The Holy Spirit

Access By One Spirit

Ephesians 2:18 (KJV) For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

In The Spirit

Ephesians 6:18 (KJV) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

In The Holy Ghost

Jude 1:20 (KJV) But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

The Spirit Itself Maketh Intercession For Us

Romans 8:26 (KJV) Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 (KJV) And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The Holy Spirit Leaves Us When We Sin

Psalms 51:11 (KJV) Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

2† How To Pray

We Must Pray Believing

He That Cometh To God

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Let Him Ask In Faith

James 1:5 (KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:6 (KJV) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

James 1:7 (KJV) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Confidence That We Have In Him

1 John 5:13 (KJV) These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:14 (KJV) And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

1 John 5:15 (KJV) And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

We Must Pray Persistently

Ask, And It Shall Be Given

Matthew 7:7 (KJV) Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

Matthew 7:8 (KJV) For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Matthew 7:9 (KJV) Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

Matthew 7:10 (KJV) Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

Matthew 7:11 (KJV) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

The Widow Woman

Luke 18:1 (KJV) And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

Luke 18:2 (KJV) Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

Luke 18:3 (KJV) And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

Luke 18:4 (KJV) And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

Luke 18:5 (KJV) Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

Luke 18:6 (KJV) And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

Luke 18:7 (KJV) And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

Luke 18:8 (KJV) I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Like our earthly parents, the Heavenly father sometimes desires to see how much we really desire what we request.

We Must Pray Earnestly
