Call The Sabbath A Delight

Most people cringe when they are asked to go to church.  Ask them if they want tickets to the super bowl and they can’t contain their glee.  They will be at the game even if it raining, sleeting, snowing, 20 below zero, etc.  But any little thing will stop them from being in church.  It should be the opposite, with our main source of joy being in God’s house, learning of Him and what he wants us to do.  We should not do OUR pleasure on God’s day but HIS will should be done on His day.  God promises us a blessing if we do.

Isaiah 58:13 (KJV) If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Isaiah 58:14 (KJV) Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

The Jewish Sabbath

There are three Hebrew words that are translated into the one English word “sabbath”.  The three words are shabath, shabbath, and shabbathown.

There is a general miss-understanding of the word ‘sabbath’.  A common misconception is that the word ‘sabbath’ means ‘Saturday’.  This is not the case.  The word ‘sabbath’ does not mean ‘Saturday’, it means to stop working, to take a break, to rest, or holyday as is shown in the following definitions from Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary.

Saturday was a sabbath (rest/holy) day but there were other days that did not fall on Saturday that were sabbath (rest/holy) days as well.

In the Old Testament, during the time of the temple and tabernacle, before Jesus died on the cross, the day of rest that was set aside to worship God fell on a Saturday.  Today, during the era of the church, we don’t gather together to worship God on Saturday, we do it on Sunday.  Jesus started this practice when he rose from the grave and met with the church on the first day of the week.

Strong's Hebrew Dictionary

Sabbath - Comes From 3 Hebrew Words

Shabath - 7673

tbv shabath shaw-bath'

a primitive root; to repose, i.e. desist from exertion; used in many implied relations (causative, figurative or specific):--(cause to, let, make to) cease, celebrate, cause (make) to fail, keep (sabbath), suffer to be lacking, leave, put away (down), (make to) rest, rid, still, take away.

Shabbath - 7676

tbv shabbath shab-bawth'

intensive from 7673; intermission, i.e (specifically) the Sabbath:--(+ every) sabbath.

Shabbathown - 7677

Nwtbv shabbathown shab-baw-thone'

from 7676; a sabbatism or special holiday:--rest, sabbath.

The Other Jewish Week Days

With the exception of the Shabbat, the weekdays have no names.  They are simply numbered: (http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/m_calint.htm#day)

yom rishon = "first day" = (Sunday)

yom sheni = "second day" = (Monday)

 yom sh'lishi = "third day" = (Tuesday)

 yom revi'i = "fourth day" = (Wednesday)

yom chamishi = "fifth day" = (Thursday)

yom shishi = "sixth day" = (Friday)

“Sabbath” Does NOT Mean “Saturday”

I will repeat once again that the word ‘sabbath’ does not mean ‘Saturday’, it means to stop working, to take a break, to rest, or holyday  Think about the following passages of scripture.

The First Day Of The Month

Leviticus 23:23 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Leviticus 23:24 (KJV) Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.

Leviticus 23:25 (KJV) Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

The first day of the Hebrew month does not always fall on a Saturday.  This is true for the Gregorian calendar as well as the Jewish Calendar.  (see hebcal.com)

The Tenth Day Of The Seventh Month

If the first day of the month always fell on a Saturday (which it doesn’t) then ten days latter would be a sabbath as well, which would be a Monday.  So we see that sabbath days did not fall exclusively on Saturday.

Leviticus 23:26 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Leviticus 23:27 (KJV) Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Leviticus 23:28 (KJV) And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.

Leviticus 23:29 (KJV) For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

Leviticus 23:30 (KJV) And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

Leviticus 23:31 (KJV) Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Leviticus 23:32 (KJV) It shall be unto you a sabbath (intermission) of rest (holiday), and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath (intermission).

The Fifteenth Day Of The Seventh Month

Here is another case where a sabbath falls on a certain day (15th) of the month.  This demonstrates once again that all sabbaths did not fall on Saturday.  Once again, the word ‘sabbath’ does NOT mean ‘Saturday’, it means ‘rest’ or ‘holy day’.

Leviticus 23:37 (KJV) These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day:

Leviticus 23:38 (KJV) Beside the sabbaths (intermission) of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the LORD.

Leviticus 23:39 (KJV) Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath (7677-holiday), and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath (7677-holiday).

“Sabbath” Sometimes Refers To A Year

Leviticus 25:1 (KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying,

Leviticus 25:2 (KJV) Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.

Leviticus 25:3 (KJV) Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;

Leviticus 25:4 (KJV) But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

Leviticus 25:5 (KJV) That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land.

Leviticus 25:6 (KJV) And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee,

Leviticus 25:7 (KJV) And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.

The Need For A Day Of Rest

NOT Based On Celestial Movement

An interesting observation is that the week is not based on the movement of the sun, moon, earth, or any other heavenly body.  A day is based on one rotation of the earth on its axis.  A year is based on one complete orbit of the earth around the sun.  But a seven day week is based on God resting the seventh day, a statement in the Bible, not a celestial movement!

By Design BEFORE Adam And Eve Sinned

God designed man’s body to need one day of rest out of a seven day time frame.  This was by design before man sinned.  Before Adam and Eve ate of the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” their bodies needed to rest every seventh day.  After man sinned God still wants man to take one day out of seven, set it aside so that they could worship Him.

God created a method whereby all men would have one day where they had no servitude obligations so that there would not be a reason for them to not worship Him.  In other words, you are not supposed to make your living on the day that God set aside to worship Him.

Genesis 2:1 (KJV) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Genesis 2:2 (KJV) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:3 (KJV) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

The 4th Commandment - Recalling The Beginning Of Creation

It was a sin for mankind to work seven days a week before God wrote the 4th commandment in the tables of stone and gave them to Moses.  The command was given on the first week of creation.  God merely wrote down what was already in effect and should have been obeyed... even without it being written down.  The 4th commandment restates what was commanded on the first week of creation and then reminds us of when the commandment was given.

Exodus 20:8 (KJV) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Exodus 20:9 (KJV) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

Exodus 20:10 (KJV) But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Exodus 20:11 (KJV) For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Jesus Didn’t Work On The Sabbath Day

Jesus Kept Both The Moral And Ceremonial Law

There is a common misconception that Jesus worked on the sabbath day.  This is not the case.  Jesus was obligated to keep both the moral and ceremonial law as all Jews were and he never disobeyed either moral or ceremonial law.  If he had not kept the 4th commandment then he would have been a sinner and not worthy to die for our sins.  However, he was sinless so we can conclude that he did not break the 4th commandment.  He kept both the ceremonial as well as the moral law 100%.

The problem is that the scribes, priest, rabbi’s, Pharisee’s, and religious rulers did not understand the Old Testament law that was given them by God through Moses.  They misinterpreted God’s word!  God does not want man to have an obligation (such as earning a living) on His day of rest that would remove man from worshiping Him.  It is not wrong to save life on the day of rest.

Jesus was not ‘working’ on the day of rest.  He was not doing that which provided His income or removed him from the temple or synagogue.  Most of the time he was in the temple or synagogue worshipping/teaching/preaching when he did his ‘work’.

An Incorrect Interpretation Of The Sabbath Day

Luke 13:10 (KJV) And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

Notice that Jesus was in God’s designated place of worship on God’s designated day.

Luke 13:11 (KJV) And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

The woman was in God’s designated place of worship on God’s designated day.

Luke 13:12 (KJV) And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

Luke 13:13 (KJV) And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

The blessing came in God’s designated place of worship on God’s designated day.  So, the question is, if you want a blessing, where should you go and when should you go there?  For us, we should go to church on Sunday when the services are held.

Luke 13:14 (KJV) And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

Luke 13:15 (KJV) The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

Luke 13:16 (KJV) And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Luke 13:17 (KJV) And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

Jesus pointed out to the ruler of the synagogue that when their cattle had a physical ailment on the day of rest that they didn’t have a problem with ‘working’ to care for the well being of their livestock.  What is more valuable?  An animal or a person?  The correct answer is a person.  We are made in the image of God but animals are not.  A person has an eternal soul that exists for eternity after he dies.  An animal just ceases to exists, they have no eternal soul.

A Correct Interpretation Of The Sabbath Day

Nehemiah 13:15 (KJV) In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

Nehemiah 13:16 (KJV) There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

Nehemiah 13:17 (KJV) Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

Nehemiah 13:18 (KJV) Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

Nehemiah 13:19 (KJV) And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

Nehemiah 13:20 (KJV) So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

Nehemiah 13:21 (KJV) Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

Nehemiah 13:22 (KJV) And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

See the difference?  Jesus wasn’t selling pots, pans, doing shopping, requiring his employees to be at work and miss church.  Jesus was in the right place (temple, synagogue) on the right day, not receiving money for his labor, and saving life.  The merchants were in the wrong place, making a living, tempting the people to miss the worship service, and they weren’t saving lives either.

The End Of The Ceremonial Law

The Veil Rent

Matthew 27:51 (KJV) And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Mark 15:38 (KJV) And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

Luke 23:45 (KJV) And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

When Jesus died on the cross it ended the Jewish way of worship... the sacrificing of bulls, goats, the Jewish holidays, worshiping on Saturday, etc.  The veil of the temple that hid the holiest of holies was rent in two and the church era began.  All of the ceremonial laws that were performed by the Levites ended.  We no longer have to follow the sabbath days that were given to Israel.  But, the moral laws are timeless; they are absolute, set from the beginning of time and are never obsolete.

Ceremonial Law Ended

The Jews that were saved during the time of the early church were raised in the temple and synagogue.  The ceremonial laws of Moses were still fresh on their mind and they had the tendency to bring those into the church.  This is why the apostle Paul made the following statement:

Colossians 2:16 (KJV) Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Colossians 2:17 (KJV) Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

The “meat”, “drink”, “holyday’s”, “new moons”, and “Sabbath days” mentioned in this passage of scripture is referring specifically to the Sabbaths mentioned in Leviticus chapter 23, not to the “Sabbath” mentioned in the 10 Commandments.  We can know this because the next part of the verse says that they “are a shadow of things to come”, they are symbolic/ceremonial not moral.

1) The LORD's Passover (Leviticus 23:5)

2) The Feast Of Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:6-8)

3) The Sheaf Of The Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:9-14)

4) The Feast Of Weeks - Pentecost (Leviticus 23:15-22)

5) A Memorial Of Blowing Trumpets (Leviticus 23:23-25)

6) A Day Of Atonement (Leviticus 23:26-32)

7) The Feast Of Tabernacles - Booths (Leviticus 23:33-43)

The ceremonial laws ended when Jesus died on the cross.  The ceremonies were pictures, Jesus was the real thing.  The real thing had happened.  The pictures that were pointing forward are now no longer valid.

The following passage from Hebrews shows very clearly that when the Bible speaks of the laws ceasing, it is speaking of the ceremonial law ceasing, not the moral law.

Hebrews 10:1 (KJV) For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Hebrews 10:2 (KJV) For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

Hebrews 10:3 (KJV) But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

Hebrews 10:4 (KJV) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Hebrews 10:5 (KJV) Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

Hebrews 10:6 (KJV) In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

The Moral Law Didn’t

The moral laws DID NOT END when Jesus died on the cross.  They are timeless and absolute, never ending.  God’s moral law reveals to us how to live and what sin is.  The 10 commandments are not ceremonial laws, they are MORAL laws.  God still wants us to observe the sabbath day, a day set aside once out of every seven days to worship him.  For the church era that sabbath day, that day of rest, that day of ceasing your work is SUNDAY!

The First Day Of The Week

Sunday - A Sabbath Day

The Sunday that the Mary’s discovered that Jesus had risen from the grave was a sabbath day!  At sunrise the day was half over because the Jewish day started the evening before.  That is why has the phrases ‘end of the sabbath’ and ‘as it began to dawn’ and ‘first day of the week’.  Jesus rose on the sabbath day, which happened to be Sunday.

Matthew 28:1 (KJV) In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

We Now Worship On Sunday

The Bible shows that the church was meeting on Sunday, the first day of the week.  This is when Jesus appeared to the church, Sunday evening.  Doubting Thomas happened to be absent from the Sunday evening services that day.  He missed a blessing that night and didn’t eve know it.  Many people miss Sunday evening services and don’t even know that they also are missing blessings.

The First Sunday After Jesus Resurrection

John 20:1 (KJV) The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

.

.

.

John 20:19 (KJV) Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

The Absent Member, Doubting Thomas

John 20:24 (KJV) But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

John 20:25 (KJV) The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

The Second Sunday After Jesus Resurrection

One week later, on a Sunday, the disciples were meeting again.  Sunday is the 1st day, Saturday is the 7th, so the eight day would be a Sunday as well.

John 20:26 (KJV) And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

John 20:27 (KJV) Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

John 20:28 (KJV) And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

John 20:29 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

John 20:30 (KJV) And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

John 20:31 (KJV) But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

The New Testament Church Met On Sunday

Here we see that the church was once again meeting on Sunday.

Acts 20:7 (KJV) And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

Offerings Were To Be Taken On Sunday

The tithes and offerings were taken up on Sunday because that is the day that the church had set aside to worship God.

1 Corinthians 16:2 (KJV) Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

We Are Commanded To Attend Church

This command was given to the church.  If you are a member of a Baptist church it is your duty and obligation to attend all the services.

Hebrews 10:23 (KJV) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Hebrews 10:24 (KJV) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Hebrews 10:25 (KJV) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Hebrews 10:26 (KJV) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Hebrews 10:27 (KJV) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Our Desires

After a person is born again, there is a love for God’s house and a desire to be there with other believers.  If a person does not want to be in God’s house as he is commanded to do then there is something spiritually wrong with that person.

As we read through the Bible we notice that those who are close to God like to be in his presence and those that have spiritual problems do not want to be in God’s presence.

To Not Be In God’s presence

There are many good examples of this.  A few prominent ones are Adam, Eve, and Cain.  They all left God’s presence after they had sinned.

Adam And Eve

Genesis 3:8 (KJV) And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Cain

Genesis 4:16 (KJV) And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

To Be In God’s Presence

A Sign Of Salvation

Wanting to be in God’s house is a sign of salvation, “we love the brethren” and the brethren meet together and worship in God’s house.  Do you really love God’s people?  If you do then you are going to want to be with them.  If you don’t, then you are most likely not really saved.

1 John 3:14 (KJV) We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

A saved person that is in God’s will has a desire to be in God’s house.  Observe the attitude in the following passages and see how the love demonstrated to be in God’s house.

I Will Dwell In The House Of The LORD For Ever

Psalms 23:1 (KJV) <<A Psalm of David.>> The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalms 23:2 (KJV) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Psalms 27:3 (KJV) Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

Psalms 27:4 (KJV) One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Psalms 27:5 (KJV) For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Psalms 27:7 (KJV) Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.

Psalms 27:8 (KJV) When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

Psalms 27:9 (KJV) Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

Psalms 27:10 (KJV) When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Psalms 27:11 (KJV) Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

Psalms 27:14 (KJV) Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

With The Voice Of Joy And Praise

Psalms 42:1 (KJV) <<To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.>> As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

Psalms 42:2 (KJV) My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

Conclusion

·         When God designed man’s body and it was still in a perfect state without sin, it was designed to rest one day out of a seven day period.

·         The word ‘sabbath’ does not mean ‘Saturday’, it means to stop working, to take a break, to rest, or holyday

·         Jesus never worked on the ‘sabbath’ day.  What the scribes, priests, Pharisees, etc. called work was not work.  They were misinterpreting God’s word.

·         The 4th commandment existed before God wrote it in tables of stone in the 10 Commandments.  This commandment was given on the first week of creation.  It was not given exclusively to the Jews by Moses; it was given to all people from the first week of creation before the flood, before Moses, and never nullified.

·         The ceremonial way of worship ended when Jesus died on the cross and ushered in the church era.

·         The 10 commandments are not ceremonial, they are moral, and they are still in effect today.

·         We still have to obey the 4th commandment today, however, it is on Sunday that we take our day of rest and worship God.  This example was set by the church.  They were meeting and worshiping on Sunday.  Sunday is the day that Jesus met with the believers as a church legitimizing Sunday as our day of worship.

·         We are forbidden to miss church, this includes Sunday evening services and Wednesday evening services.

·         People that are right with God find it a joy to be in God’s house, not a nuisance.  They place worshipping God above their, job, family, friends, etc.

Exodus 20:8 (KJV) Remember the sabbath day (Sunday), to keep it holy.
